Japa is the repeated, unhurried repetition of a sacred name or short phrase, aloud or silently, often with a mala (prayer beads) to keep count without needing to think about counting. In grief, it is traditionally used not to distract from the loss but to hold it inside something larger — the repetition becomes a container for feeling that is too big for ordinary thought to process alone.
