Lying still, a systematic rotation of attention is guided through body parts, breath, and sensation in a fixed sequence, keeping the practitioner on the threshold between waking and sleep rather than pushing toward either. Traditionally described as producing rest that is deeper than an equivalent length of sleep, precisely because it works with, rather than fights, a wired-but-tired state.
